Govt league resumes tonight
The 2004 Government Basketball League returns to action tonight with the underachieving Procurement & Supply team taking on a resurgent Office of the Public Auditor squad in the opener scheduled at 6:30pm.
P&S has one of the stronger lineups in the league, but so far that hasn’t translated to many victories. OPA, meanwhile, hopes to build on the momentum of its upset win over defending champion Northern Marianas College the last time out.
The 8pm second game then pits Department of Labor against a very dangerous Tinian team, who seem to play better fresh from their cross-channel trip to Saipan.
Players to watch for Labor are bull-strong Steve Rasa, resourceful center Tim Wesley, and playmaker Mitch Aaron.
Tinian, for its part, will continue to bank on big boys Fritz San Nicolas, Jesse Manibusan, and Keith Nabors. The team also has a platoon of fleet-footed and smooth-shooting guards to take care of transition and the outside.
Saturday’s schedule would then have a limping Public School System team taking on a much-improved Department Public Safety II quintet in the 2pm first game.
PSS is still expected to miss court general Don Blondin, who sprained his foot the previous game. DPS II, meanwhile, shored up its scoring and defense with the addition of high-leaping Ed Diaz.
Both teams will also try to rebound from losses. PSS missed its date with destiny, succumbing against a well-motivated NMC team Monday to kiss its perfect aspirations goodbye, while DPS II is still smarting from its setback against Tinian last Saturday.
Saipan Mayor’s Office and Tinian then tangle in the 3:30pm second game. Mayor’s Office will have its hands full against the visitors and must pray for a miracle, or better yet, a cancellation in order not to leave the venue with a thorough beating.
