Students proved that mathematics could still be exciting, particularly for elementary students.

Grace Christian Academy held its annual Math Olympiad 2005 Wednesday morning at the school auditorium. The contest was open to students of grades one to five, with each grade having 10 contestants each.

Austin Brock stood out among 10 math wizards in first grade; Cloency Zuriel Chua won on the second grade level; Aldreen Adriano on the third grade level; Anastasia Schweiger on fourth level; and Genesis Mamaril on the grade five level.

The contestants were all excited to raise their flags to declare their answers but only one emerged as winner for each category.

The contest was intended to stimulate enthusiasm and a love for mathematics, according to Grace Christian teacher Susan Pajarillaga. The event also aimed to foster mathematical creativity among students through the joy and thrill of such mental challenges like the quiz.

The event’s judges for grades one to three were Crystal Calvin, Janelle Peren, Nikki Shyrack, and Maricris Ganapin. For grades four to five, the judges were Grace Duran, Heather Linday, and Maricel Deris.

Nicole Benjamin served as quizmaster, and read the mechanics of the quiz, which had easy, average, and difficult rounds. Each round consisted of six questions each. The easy and average rounds were oral and the difficult round comprised problem-solving questions (Marconi Calindas)
