Title week
Not one but two kings of the diamond were crowned in a span of a week, as the Rep. Dave Apatang Hustlers and the Eliminators went home with the bacon in the SML Fall League and SSA Slow Pitch Softball League, respectively.
The Hustlers successfully defended their championship, wrapping up their best-of-five finals series with the Heinz & David North Stars, 15-5, in Game 4 last Jan. 22 at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
Eliminators, for its part, made mincemeat of X-Clusive and swept them in a one-night, best-of-three championships Wednesday.
In the first game, Eliminators had their bats going yard in a 30-9 rout. The second game was a bit more challenging, as the Eliminators needed to make a comeback to eke out a 21-16 triumph to reach the Promised Land.
Hours before the Hustlers and the North Stars squared off on the diamond, local and off-island runners participated in the 24th Annual Saipan Half Marathon & 19th Annual 10-Kilometer Fun Run.
Veteran roadrunner Jung Young Kim dominated the grueling half marathon, while youth runner Marcan Aldan was the first to cross the finish line in the 10K competition.
On Tuesday, the Adam and Eve Mixed League held its awards ceremony with Nila’s Salon winning the overall championship. JET Holdings Co. and Whatever also won their fare share of team awards, with Mark “The Shark” Halstead and Diane Camacho taking home the high average plums.
Action in the Island Wide Volleyball League also continued last week. The 2004 Government Basketball League, in contrast, took a weeklong break to prepare for the playoffs.
