Parents are the best teachers of their children, hence the need for them to take leadership roles not only at home but also in school and the community, serving as role models worthy of emulation.

This was the premise behind Monday’s signing of a proclamation declaring February as Parents Leadership Month, with the theme “Strengthening Families Through Parent Leadership.”

Gov. Juan N. Babauta said that parent leadership is an essential and effective way of strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect.

Parents Anonymous says that meaningful parent leadership occurs when parents gain the knowledge and skills necessary to function in meaningful leadership roles and present a “parent voice” to help shape the direction of their families, programs, and communities.

Babauta said that partnership with parents effectively implement the program’s strategies, focusing on training, shared responsibilities, planning, implementation, oversight and evaluation policies, practices and programs that affect families and the community.

Department of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Juan L. Babauta said this program was created to recognize the extraordinary courage and tenacity of parents who go out of their way to help improve their families and the community.

Secretary Babauta stressed that parent leadership begins at home but it also extends beyond the four corners of one’s home as parents begin to be involved in activities that help shape the lives of children.

DYS has lined up various activities of the program such as family fun day on Feb. 19, competitions that will also involve schools in Rota and Tinian, and a congress as the programs’ culminating event. (Marconi Calindas)
