Democrats to name their choice on Wednesday

Former governor Froilan C. Tenorio is keeping his fingers crossed that the Democratic Party would choose him on Wednesday as its official candidate in this year’s gubernatorial elections.

Tenorio said party members will hold a meeting on Wednesday primarily to review the letters of intent filed by Tenorio and Sen. Luis Crisostimo to run for the gubernatorial post under the Democratic Party.

He expressed hope that officials would reject Crisostimo’s bid for the party’s endorsement on the basis of the senator’s alleged failure to comply with party by-laws regarding submission of a letter of intent.

“The central executive committee will have no choice but to reject Senator Crisostimo’s letter of intent,” he said. “I’m hopeful that the party will decide Wednesday night.”

According to Tenorio, Crisostimo has failed to name a running mate in his letter of intent. The party’s by-laws require that the letter of intent of the candidate for governor and lieutenant governor must be submitted to the chair separately.

The deadline for submission of letters of intent ended on Feb. 1.

Further, the senator failed to pay his party fee of $1,500. Under the Democratic Party’s rules, all declarations/letters for candidacy “must be accompanied by a check for the filing/primary fee in order to be accepted.”

Under normal procedure, Tenorio added, the party chairman would refer the letters to a credentials committee for review.

But the party currently does not have members to appoint to the committee, he said. Besides, the central executive committee has the authority in itself to choose a standard bearer.

The meeting was initially scheduled for Monday night, but it was postponed because the party’s headquarters in Garapan was not ready for occupancy yet. The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. has yet to reconnect power supply to the building, Tenorio said.
