Coca Cola employees and their families gathered Saturday last week at Pau Pau Beach and held a cleanup that not only served as a bonding experience for the employees but also as a way to give back to the community.

“We just wanted to give something back to community,” said sales and marketing director Kathryn Barry. “It is the first cleanup but not the last. We’re looking to do this several times a year.”

Barry said the activity also served as a chance for employees and their families to get together and enjoy each other’s company outside of working hours, while at the same time doing something positive for the community and the beaches.

Barry said the activity was planned for about a month before they actually cleaned up the beach, and noted that the group was assisted by the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, which took care of trash disposal.

While doing the cleanup, Barry and her colleagues experienced the 6.6 earthquake that shook the Marianas.

“There’s was a little bit of excitement,” she said. “We were sitting under the trees when it kind of started, and we looked at each other, then it really started and we were like ‘Oh my gosh.’ There were children in the water and the first thing to do is to make sure everyone is safe.”

Barry said the group would pick a different location each time it goes out for the cleaning project. (Shan Seman)
