Chamber swears in new officers
Business and political leaders convened Saturday night at the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach’s Hibiscus Hall to attend the formal installation of officers of the Saipan Chamber of Commerce, the largest organization of private businesses in the Northern Marianas.
Wearing tuxedos and evening gowns, participants to the event witnessed the swearing in of the Chamber’s new set of officers for the year 2005 by no less than Gov. Juan N. Babauta.
Babauta, Washington Rep. Pete A. Tenorio and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente led government officials at the gathering of the CNMI’s business elite.
The Chamber’s new officers include Alex Sablan, president; Juan T. Guerrero, vice president; Jay B. Jones, secretary; and Michael S. Johnson, treasurer. The board of directors includes David M. Sablan Sr., Jim Arenovski, Harry B. Blalock, Charles V. Cepeda, and Bob Hudkins.
The event also highlighted the announcement of the Chamber’s “2004 Business Person of the Year.” The Chamber named Continental Micronesia president and CEO Mark Erwin as the award’s recipient.
The Chamber also conducted a silent auction of some merchandise and services, which raked in some $3,390 for the benefit of the Chamber’s education scholarship fund. Babauta offered in auction a bottle of Coca Cola that was uniquely designed as souvenir for participants to President Bush’s inauguration in Washington, D.C. Saipan Garment Manufacturers Association executive director Richard Pierce made the highest bid for the softdrink bottle at $500.
A group of performers displayed skill in Tai Ichi, which will be performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, to entertain participants as they enjoy sumptuous dinner and drinks. Stephen V. Nygard, publisher of the Marianas Business Journal and Guam Business Magazine, emceed the ceremonies.
