Saipan welcomed about 500 sailors aboard the nuclear submarine USS Olympia and destroyer USS Mustin Monday.

The two U.S. Navy boats will be on Saipan until Friday for much needed rest and recreation.

Yesterday, two officers from USS Olympia visited Saipan Southern High School and spoke in front of more than 100 high school students.

According to SSHS senior army instructor Joanquin Kiyoshi, the event was the first time students heard an inspirational talk from an officer of a submarine.

The commanding officers of the submarine and destroyer will be joining some of their crew today for a two-day community-relations activity at Sugar King Estate in Garapan.

The cleanup will be held from 9am to 2pm and Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela will again be hosting an island-style barbecue cookout for the volunteers.

Commanding officers of the USS Olympia and USS Mustin are also expected to receive the Municipality of Saipan Honorary Plague of Recognition and Appreciation and the Municipality’s Hospitality Pin from Tudela today.

The COMREL project exemplifies the tradition of community partnership effort undertaken by the Mayor’s office and the CNMI Office of Military and Veterans Affairs with the United States visiting military personnel engaged in environmental stewardship, said reports from Mayor’s office.

The visiting U.S. crew will again help to maintain the scenic, historical, recreational, cultural, natural, and archaeological characteristics of the Sugar King estate. (Marconi Calindas)
