SML meets to discuss opening day
The players are ready, the umpires are ready, and the organizers of the Saipan Major League are ready to begin the 2005 season of the highest caliber of baseball in the Commonwealth, and while the “camera” and “action” are all set to go as well, everyone still has to wait for the lights before the first pitch can cross the plate at Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field.
According to league coordinator Tony Rogolifoi, the only thing that can possibly postpone the start of the season is a delay in repairing the overhead lighting array at the Oleai Sports Complex.
“The teams are ready to go. It’s only a matter of getting those lights fixed, and we are just waiting on the contractor to get the job done,” he said.
The good news is that the SML has grown to six teams from the four-team league last season. The Miller Lite Brewers are soon to begin their title defense against the Northern Yankees, Ford Rangers, Toyota Tacoma, San Antonio Mets, and Team Bud, but Rogolifoi said that a seventh team may still be added to the mix, as the 35-and-over Master’s is contemplating a run at the title as well.
Rogolifoi wants to get all of the teams on the same page before the start of the season, and called for the managers, coaches, and team representatives to meet in the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium at 5:30pm tomorrow night.
Team officials are reminded to bring their form of payment for the $1,200 league fees as well as their rosters to the meeting, and that checks may be made payable to the Saipan major League.
