Twenty-eight stakeholders of the CNMI Department of Public Health are attending the 2005 Health Leaders Achieving Today Tomorrow’s Excellence NMI Management in Health Course, which began Monday and will end today.

The course, held from Feb. 28 to March 4, 2005, at the Hafadai Beach Hotel, is a collaborative effort between the DPH and the Sustainable Management Development Program, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and University of Guam HLATTE.

Secretary of Public Health Dr. James Hofschneider said in a statement that the objective of the course is “for the participants to apply the leadership skills learned to implement the Quality Improvement Story in order to positively affect customer care at the Commonwealth Health Center.”

That means improving the process by which things are run at the DPH, with the ultimate goal of improving services and customer care at the department.

Forty hours of intense learning will be followed with worksite improvement projects for three months. Supervisory visits will be conducted by the certified course facilitators. Graduation is set for June 2005 after the completion and acceptance of hospital worksite improvement projects.

“I have seen these tools before from my former bosses. I never knew the names of these tools or how to use them after they left. This course is full of information very useful for my job,” according to course participant Flaviana Saimon, labor and delivery nursing manager.

Ray Chong, acting maintenance manager, chimed in: “Sitting with the nurse managers this week has made me realize the importance of supporting the health care providers. I will be working to improve the service for the internal customers as well as the external customers of the hospital promoting quality of health care.

Acting nursing director Pasquana Calvo and personnel specialist Tina Santos facilitated the course, together with Lori Duenas and Maria Pangelinan, with the University of Guam HLATTE.

Dr. Mike Malison, Director, Sustainable Management Development Program, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was present to provide assistance as the mentor of the four SMDP Graduates. (PR)
