23rd Micronesian Open hits shores today
Just two weeks after a fleet of international windsurfers carved the surf between the American Memorial Park and Managaha Island, the 23rd Micronesian Open Windsurfing Cup is returning to the shores of Micro Beach to add an array of colors to the many shades of blue and green in the lagoon.
The Marianas Aqua Marine Sports, Seawind Marine Sports, Marianas Visitors Authority, and Hyatt Regency Saipan Hotel teamed up to host another edition of the long running local event that starts this morning at 9am and continues though tomorrow, at 4pm.
This year’s fleet of windsurfers took care of registration yesterday in the lobby of the Hyatt, and following today’s skipper’s meeting at 9am, they will utilize a combination of speed and skill to maneuver the course until they retire at 4pm.
Sunday’s schedule mirrors that of today’s with the added bonus of the awards ceremony later in the evening.
Last year, Harumitsu Ohno of Saipan harnessed the power of the wind and made short work of five of eight windsurfing slalom events to top the 22nd staging of the Micronesian Open Windsurfing Cup.
Ann Jordan then made it two-for-two for the home island, after winning the first five slalom races en route to capturing the women’s open.
Japan’s Masahiro Tsuneoka then prevented a shutout in favor of Saipan by winning the masters division. Long-time Saipan resident and windsurfing organizer Shigeru Tomita came in fourth best
