Winkfield, Dillay, Atalig top field events in All Comers Meet

Last of two parts

Seventeen-year-olds Jeremy Winkfield and Jesse Atalig, and 20-year-old Dexter Dillay had memorable performances in Saturday’s All Comers Meet at the Oleai track and field facility, posting notable performances in the field events and in so doing improved their chances of qualifying for the upcoming South Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

Winkfield, a student at Marianas High School, put up the best performance in the boys discus throw, when his second attempt measured at 26.26 meters. He also recorded the second-best throw of the day with a distance of 24.55 meters in his third attempt.

Atalig placed a close second in the event after his second throw of the day landed some 24.15 meters away. He also threw for 24.10 in his third try.

Sylvan Rangamar and John Kim placed third and fourth with throws of 23.35 and 21.19, while Joshua Manglona (19.53), Angelo Cruz (18.97), and Aran Evangelista (16.11) rounded up the cast. Both Cruz and Evangelista were the youngest of the bunch at 13 years of age.

Atalig took the spotlight in the shot put, beating out seven competitors with a throw of 8.97. Joshua Manglona and Steven Mendiola followed with 8.87 and 8.79, while Angelo Cruz and Rangamar placed fourth and fifth with 7.82 and 7.74. Kim (7.71), Evangelista (6.89), and Brandon Cruz (5.92) also competed in the event.

Rachel Rangamar was the lone competitor in the girls competition, throwing the discus to a distance of 13.93 meters and the shot put to 4.66 meters.

For his part, Dillay ruled the long jump when his second jump reached a distance of 5.95 meters. He also recorded jumps of 5.78 and 5.60.

Placing second was Tyrone Omar with 5.76 meters, while Trevor Ogumoro jumped for 4.66 meters for third place. Angelo Cruz and Sylvan Rangamar both recorded jumps of 4.35, however, Cruz took fourth place because of his second best jump, which had a distance of 4.15 while Rangamar scratched on his other two attempts. Brandon Cruz and P.J. Cruz placed sixth and seventh with distances of 4.20 and 3.64, respectively.

Lia Rangamar won the girls corner with her best jump registering at 3.11 meters, while Reylynn Sapong placed second with a jump of 2.92 meters.

The meet came to an end after the 4x100m relay, which was won by Team Ol’Aces. The team, comprised of Dillay, Winkfield, Dan Barcinas, and anchor Darrel Roligat, completed the race in a sterling 46.37 seconds. The Wanna B’s, made up of Luis Iguel, Ben Jones, Roger Jones, and Tyrone Omar, took second place after clocking in at 46.73.

What’s Your Name earned third place with a time of 54.54 while Tinian took fourth in 56.57.

Members of What’s Your Name include Kovin Ogumoro, Steven Kim, Aitau Barcinas, and Robin Sapong while Tinian was made up of Evangelista, Brandon and Angelo Cruz, and Steven Manglona.

The lone girls team, All Stars, finished the race in 1:05.01. The team comprised of Bo Wang, Lia Rangamar, Chang Wang, and Reylynn Sapong.

Northern Mariana Islands Track and Field Federation hosted the meet. The final Mini Games qualifier for athletics will be held next month.

The team will feature just two athletes and a coach. A point system will determine which athletes will represent the Commonwealth in the Mini Games, which will be from July 25 to Aug. 4.
