With the South Pacific Mini Games just around the corner, the organizing committee has expressed a need for technical officials to officiate various events in Palau.

A total of 11 sports are still in need of qualified officials to serve as referees, umpires, or scorekeepers.

OAA-accredited referees are needed in athletics, BCO-accredited referees in baseball, FIBA Oceania Level 2 referees in basketball, FINA pool referees, one open water official and one official starter for swimming, ITTF-accredited umpires for table tennis, and OTF-accredited umpires for lawn tennis.

Softball is also in need of ISF-accredited umpires and scorekeepers, while triathlon needs ITU-accredited course referees.

Beach volleyball, wrestling, and weightlifting are also awaiting officials to fill available slots.

FIVB-accredited umpires are needed for beach volleyball, FILA accredited referees for wrestling, and IWF/OWF accredited referees for weightlifting.

The Palau organizing committee said it would be responsible for accommodations and meals only for the duration of the Games.

Interested officials may contact their individual federations or visit the Mini Games website for more information.

In related news, host Palau has allocated a little over $1-million towards upgrading the facilities in preparation for the Games, which is expected to host some 2,358 athletes and officials from July 25 to Aug. 4.

Ric Mangham, director of facilities for the SPMG, recently announced that bids have already been received for works on the National Gymnaisum, the National Track and Field Arena, the Meyuns Field, the National Swimming Pool, and the Asahi Baseball Field.

Bids were also received for development work at the Long Island recreational park, which will receive additional funding from Koror State.

“The existing facilities in Palau were built for hosting the 1998 Micronesian Games, and by and large only require a face lift to be ready for the Mini Games,” Mangham said.

The Long Island development, which will cater to beach volleyball action, is being eyed to become an important recreational area for the State of Koror after the Games.
