All of the hours that the CNMI National Baseball Team is spending on the field in preparation for the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games this summer will be for naught if the boys of summer fail to raise the necessary funds needed to make the trip to Palau.

So far, the team has organized two hot lunch sales along Beach Road to try to close the gap, and while they have brought in a decent amount of money, they still have a way to go.

Their latest attempt at filling their coffers takes place a month from today, when the CNMI All-Star team will be hosting a softball tournament.

According to CNMI All-Star Joey Dela Cruz, the team has put together the inaugural SPG Softball Tournament to benefit the national team from Friday, April 29, through Sunday, May 1, in order to put the finishing touches on their fund raising campaign.

The tournament will be limited to the first 12 teams that show their support for the all-stars by submitting their $200 entry fee. Aside from the thrill of playing for the cash and prizes associated with a first-place finish, players will also be able to take part in the homerun derby and pitching accuracy competition for an additional $20 per person per event.

Dela Cruz didn’t release all of the details of the prizes, but said that it will be available soon. While the team is hoping to raise all of the necessary funds through a number of planned activities, Dela Cruz said that the community doesn’t have to play to support the team.

“We appreciate any support to help us on our way, and you don’t only have to enter a team to help us out,” he said.
