Sprinter Darrel Roligat is
It will be a very busy summer for Darrel Roligat.
All the hard work the sprinter has put into training is finally paying off as the 16-year-old has been handpicked by the Northern Mariana Islands Track and Field Federation to represent the Commonwealth in the World Youth Championships and the World Championships, both under the IAAF.
Roligat will compete in both the 100m and 200m events in the World Youth Championships slated from July 14 to July 17 in Morocco.
Not even a month later, the Marianas High School student will see action in the 100m dash in the 2005 World Championships set in Finland from Aug. 6 to Aug. 14.
Roligat’s selection was disclosed in yesterday’s NMITFF board meeting at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.
In recent years, Roligat has shown that he is indeed among the cream of the crop in athletics, showing improvement in his favorite events, the 100m and 200m sprints. Most recently he took top honors in the two events during the All Comers Meet a couple of Saturday’s ago at the Oleai Sports Complex track and field facility.
Roligat ran like the wind and crossed the finish line ahead of everyone in 11.25 seconds in the 100m. He also took the 200m after clocking in at 23.87 seconds.
He capped his day by anchoring the winning team in the 4X100m relay. The team, comprised of Roligat, Dan Barcinas, Jeremy Winkfield, and Dexter Dillay, finished in a sterling 46.37 seconds.
Roligat’s performance in the meet earned him the federation’s nod for the monthly NMASA Male Student Athlete of the Month nomination for March.
NMASA will determine the recipient of the prestigious award during its monthly meeting next week.
Last year, Roligat earned the monthly student athlete plum for September and was among those eligible to win the 2004 Male Student Athlete of the Month Award.
