Scoreboard malfunction at Ada Gym
The scoreboard at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium is currently inoperable and its malfunction resulted in the postponement of Tuesday night’s Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Invitational Co-ed Basketball League.
Teams that were scheduled to take the court were defending champion Aqua Resort Club and Hyatt Regency Saipan at 6:30pm and Commonwealth Utilities Corp. and Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach at 8pm.
According to Division of Sports and Recreation staff Joe Lizama, the scoreboard has been down since Monday.
“There’s power going to the scoreboard but it just won’t turn on,” he said. “Guys were here all afternoon [yesterday] trying to fix it. They left and when I checked, it was still not working.”
The scoreboard is also used in games of the ongoing BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League, however, BANMI official Elias Rangamar said yesterday that all games scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday will carry on as planned.
He said a smaller scoreboard could be used for the games to be played.
Meanwhile, Mobil league commissioner Abner Venus said yesterday that games scheduled for tonight “might be canceled” pending another attempt at fixing the scoreboard today.
“I asked the guy who looked at the scoreboard [yesterday] to try to give me a quick fix, but we’ll just have to wait and see. There’s a major problem with the scoreboard and it seems like we have to order the parts. So I can’t really tell yet if the games [tonight] will be postponed.”
Both leagues were scheduled to resume after a short break in the observance of Holy Week.
Originally schedule to play in tonight’s Mobil action are McDonald’s and Microl-Toyota at 6:30pm, while Hyatt and the Commonwealth Ports Authority were to bang heads at 8pm.
BANMI 25-and-under games for tomorrow features a big clash as undefeated teams SaipanCell Hoopaholics and Toyota Prius are scheduled to see action at 6:30pm followed by a battle between the Ghasias 7-Kings and the San Antonio Wildcats at 8pm.
Saturday’s bouts include the Garapan Rollers taking on the Tanapag Young Warriors at 1pm and Ulloa going head to head with the San Vicente Sunrisers at 3pm.
