Abuzz with activity

The seven days that preceded Holy Week were one of the busiest for sports on the island.

But the preponderance of activity started even before the Holy Week ended, as the NMITF held its “Rumble on the Road” on Black Saturday, March 27, at the northern part of the island.

On Monday, the IVYBL resumed with 69ers continuing their perfect run after beating the Young Warriors. Other 14-and-under games last week saw Sixers I edge Kagman and Garapan Rollers do a number on Sixers II.

In contrast, no games in the 5th Annual Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Invitational Basketball League were played because the scoreboard at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conked out.

In baseball, the Northern Yankees gave the Freedom Air Masters no quarter in a mercy rule shortened Saipan Major League game Monday night at the Palacios Baseball Field.

In the Little League, Ol’Aces mimicked the older hardballers with a similar domination of Yankees in the Big League Thursday also at the Palacios Field.

On Wednesday, defending champion Miller Lite Brewers escaped with a 6-5 win over debuting Tacoma in the SML.

The playoffs of the Island-wide Volleyball League also returned to the Ada Gym last week with Ol’Aces and NMC Proa ousting favorites Managaha Chiefs and Lost Boyz, respectively, in the men’s division.

The women’s side had seen no such upsets as She Devils and Pikan Gaga continued to roll against pretenders the entire week, and as expected, will meet for all the league’s marbles tomorrow.
