Buenaventura, Buboltz score men’s 4.0 win
Second seed Eli Buenavantura and Craig Buboltz took home the men’s 4.0 doubles crown in the 5th Annual Coca-Cola Tennis Championships yesterday at the Pacific Islands Club tennis courts.
Buboltz’s power and aggressive attacking style proved to be a perfect complement for Buenaventura’s all-around court savvy and veteran experience, as the May-September duo downed surprise finalists Perry Cacdac and Michael Robert in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The loss in the championship round put an end to Cacdac and Robert’s Cinderella run in the tournament, which saw them upset top seeds Roy Pangelinan and Dino Jones in the opening round and then exact sweet revenge against doubles specialists Jorge Olanda and Edwin Maratas in the second in three tough sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Olanda and Maratas previously tormented Cacdac and Robert, although the two were playing with different doubles partners at that time.
Cacdac, with Father Ryan Jimenez serving as his teammate, lost to Olanda and Maratas in three sets in the Century Insurance Tennis Classic last year, while Robert, pairing then with Rommel Tiosejo, also lost in the same number of sets against the same two players in last year’s Verizon tournament.
In the men’s 3.0 final, John Jenkins and Steve Tilly defeated Evan Hunsberger and Dexter Palacios in two hotly contested sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Jenkins and Tilly barged into the championship round after outlasting Nate Algaier and Daniel Colton in the second round, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0, late Saturday.
Long-time partners Yuko Kobayashi and Kazumi Imai then added another championship to their already stacked trophy case after hurdling Letty Jones and Sally Wong in an unusually easy game, 6-2, 6-2, in the women’s open title match.
Kobayashi and Imai earned the right to play early qualifiers Jones and Wong after subduing Cleofe Santos and Young Son, 6-4, 6-2, in the previous round.
In the women’s 3.0, Nelia Luna and Lucita Pasana bagged the title after an unbeaten campaign in the round robin. Luna and Pasana beat Melanie Daly and Karen Buettner Friday then secured the championship with a 6-2, 6-1 conquest of the mother-and-daughter tandem of Delia and Melody Johnson Sunday.
