FAA to release $5M for fire trucks
The Federal Aviation Administration is expected to release $5 million in grants for the purchase of fire trucks for Micronesian airports, the first project to be coordinated by the Commonwealth Ports Authority under its agreement with the federal agency.
CPA executive director Carlos Salas said the ports authority would be helping its counterparts in other Micronesian airports in putting together the plan and specifications for the vehicle purchase.
CPA will provide the assistance pursuant to its memorandum of agreement with FAA, which tasks CPA to oversee funds for airport improvement projects in Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands.
According to Salas, FAA is also looking at structural improvements such as construction of fire stations and runway rehabilitation as its next projects for the airports.
FAA and CPA’s agreement was signed earlier this year. It will remain effective for one year and is renewable.
“The goal is to assist airports in their application for grants and implementation of airport improvement programs. But this arrangement is designed for a short-term basis only. We plan to have the airports take over the whole program by themselves eventually,” Salas said. (Agnes E. Donato)
