16 hemodialysis chairs turned over to CHC
At least 16 hemodialysis chairs worth about $19,200 were officially turned over to the Commonwealth Health Center Friday morning by CHC Volunteers.
The non-profit organization, which is composed of 15 members, donated the chairs, which cost an estimated $1,200 each. The turnover was held at the Radiology section where the chairs are being temporarily kept.
CHC Volunteers president Kim Prinz said the funds used to buy the chairs came from the money of people who have been patronizing the gift shop inside the hospital all through the years.
“We want to let everyone knows, this is where your money was spent,” she said.
Established in 1986, the volunteer group has already raised more than $2 million that all went to assist and improve hospital care.
She said the hemodialysis chairs donation is a follow up to the same donation of 20 chairs in 1998.
The chairs are specially designed for use by diabetic patients who require at least four hours of sitting during hemodialysis treatment, according to Sandra Hand, a registered nurse at the Hemodialysis Unit of CHC.
Despite its limited means, Prinz said the volunteer group has already donated several equipment to the hospital, including an eight-bed telemetry machine for the intensive care unit, mammography equipment, infant hearing screener, wheelchairs for all departments at CHC, hospital beds for patients, televisions and VCRs, cable TV for CHC, and so much more.
Public Health Secretary James U. Hofschneider thanked the volunteers for their generosity and care for patients undergoing hemodialysis. “I want everybody to support the volunteers. I applaud the volunteers’ association for their hard work. Thank you very much on behalf of the community,” he said during the brief ceremony on Friday.
Hemodialysis Unit members, including Dr. Hormaz Dastoor, nurse manager Granya Shearer, Elizabeth Untalan and Sandra Hand, attended the event.
The CHC Volunteers Aida Ada, Carmen Reyes, Rosa Fong, Anna Ludwick, and Lydia Waki witnessed the turnover. Other members of the group are Amparo Tenorio, Rita Tenorio, Sue Sablan, Rieko Guerrero, Bonnie Creekmore, Kazumi Imai, Lupe Sabino and Susan Schwarz. The CHC Volunteers is encouraging more people to join them.
