Hundreds of visitors flocked to Tinian over the weekend to participate in this year’s San Jose Fiesta celebration.

The four-day fiesta, celebrated annually in honor of Tinian’s patron saint, was held from Wednesday until Sunday.

Highlights of the festivities included food and game booths, amusement rides, sports events, a cock derby, live bands, raffle draws, the traditional banquet, and the crowning of the 2005 San Jose Fiesta King and Queen.

In his speech on Saturday evening, Tinian Mayor Francisco Borja called on his constituents to put politics aside for a few days and focus on hosting the island’s visitors.

“We must remember that our off-island guests are here to spend money and have a good time. Therefore, there is no room for risking everyone in the name of political affiliation,” said Borja, who is on his last term in office.

“Tonight, let’s all pledge that there are no Republicans, there are no Democrats, there are no Independents, and there are no Covenant members. Tonight, there are only islanders. Tonight we are only one people, joining together to celebrate Tinian’s fiesta.”
