Education Commissioner Rita Hocog Inos issued a clarification yesterday that the closure of two child care centers had “absolutely nothing to do with timely issuance of checks from the PSS.”

“Instead, the closure in both instances was business related. One center was sold and the other closed because it was only serving one child,” according to a PSS statement.

Inos added that she has no idea if the “repetitious licensing system” operated by the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, as stated by Board of Education chair Roman Benavente, had anything to do with either center closing.

Local media had quoted Benavente as saying that the requirement for child care centers to annually submit documents seems to him “repetitious.” The reports identified the centers that have closed as Nang’s Day Care Center in Kagman II and Saipan Child Care Center Day and Night in San Vicente.

PSS receives federal grants to provide monetary assistance to the centers. (PR)
