Former congressman and now Commerce Secretary Andrew Salas is joining the senatorial race again under the Republican Party.

GOP announced Thursday that Salas, who ran and lost a Senate seat during the 2003 midterm elections, will be its second candidate for the third senatorial district.

The party has endorsed the re-election bid of Saipan senator Thomas “Kiyu” Villagomez.

Salas essentially takes the slot of Sen. Pete P. Reyes, whose endorsement request was earlier denied by the party.

The rejection came after Reyes refused to endorse the party’s standard bearer in this year’s election.

In 2003, GOP had chosen to field Salas over then congressman Stanley Torres for a Senate seat.

It prompted Torres to seek another term for the House of Representatives.

During the mid-term election, both Salas and Torres lost.

Torres has declared his candidacy for a House seat this year as an independent.

A year after the 2003 polls, Salas was appointed deputy Labor secretary, then as acting Commerce secretary in fall 2004.

Prior to his electoral post in the 13th Legislature, Salas was the director of the Commerce Division of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Beverages.
