First phase of new baseball field completed
The first of a three-phase construction of the much delayed Junior League baseball field project on Capitol Hill is finally complete, leading to Wednesday’s turnover of the property to the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs.
The project was initially handled by the Department of Public Works.
Phase 1 of the project included land clearing, construction of a chain link fence, and planting of Bermuda grass.
This work, which required over $200,000, was awarded by DPW to Maeda Pacific Corp.
Authorities said that Phase I of the project was completed using local funds
Vicky Villagomez, the governor’s federal grants coordinator said Wednesday that her office would seek federal funds for phase III of the project.
Phase II is already out for bid. It includes the construction of two dugouts, scoring booth, toilet and walkway, and parking area, while Phase III includes lighting, covered bleachers, and stage.
The baseball project was initially pushed by former congressman Frank Aldan during the 13th Legislature, but it did not see completion for lack of funds and limited time.
Last year, Rep. Justo Quitugua authored two bills appropriating a total of $240,000 for the Phase I construction. The bill passed the Legislature and was approved by the Executive Branch.
Wednesday’s turnover ceremony was attended by top government officials led by Gov. Juan N. Babauta, Sen. Thomas Villagomez, Rep. Quitugua, and DCCA Secretary Juan L. Babauta.
Others present were Vicky Villagomez, DPW deputy secretary Joe Rosario, and representatives from Maeda, DPW, and DCCA.
