The 2005 BANMI Men’s Island-wide Basketball League, or Budweiser Cup, will have an organizational meeting this coming Monday, May 23, at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.

League coordinator Abner Venus said the meeting would be held at 6pm and the agenda will revolve around the format for the basketball competition, proposed deadline for submission of entries, and other details associated with the start of the league.

He said time is fast running out for the start of the league, as the BANMI 25-and-under Basketball League and Mobil Oil Marianas Invitational Co-ed basketball leagues are winding down their competition.

“We have to be ready to begin the Budweiser Cup because as soon as these two leagues [25-and-under and Mobil] conclude, we have to get ready to take over their slots at the Ada Gym or risk losing them to other sports or even basketball events,” he said.

Venus said Budweiser Cup sponsor MARPAC would again bankroll the basketball competition with the champion guaranteed to take home $1,000 in cash. Runner-up and third-place teams would also receive lesser monetary prizes.

Entrance fee for the league is $900 with the first 10 teams submitting payments getting free uniforms, according to Venus. He also said each team could be comprised of a maximum of 12 players only.

Last year, the Ol’Aces hoisted their second straight Bud Cup title after edging the Angando Brothers. Members of the squad included brothers Peter and Abong Camacho, Elias Rangamar, Elias Saralu, Alfred Celes, Junior Renguul, and Gabriel White.
