NMFA takes early steps with meeting
The Northern Marianas Football (Soccer) Association continued its mission to offer the world’s most popular sport to the youth of the CNMI this past Tuesday when it hosted a crowd of interested volunteers in the Azucena room of the Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach.
According to league representative Peter Coleman, the NMFA collected information from roughly 18 volunteers interested in coaching and officiating during their first open house meeting.
“It went well. We took in a lot of information, showed a video from the East Asian Football Federation (EAF), and now have to get together to discuss the next steps in forming the NMFA,” he said.
The next steps in the process include talking to members of the sport’s governing bodies, meeting collectively as a board to discuss their findings, and having more meetings for the public.
Though the NMFA called for all interested coaches, officials, parents, and volunteers to join their organization’s meeting, they want to include anyone with even a slight interest in the sport.
Though the new league is aimed toward co-ed participants between 5-16 years of age, NMFA will not be limited to youth soccer if there is a call from the community.
“If there is enough interest, there will also be a male and a female adult’s league,” he added.
Coleman said that the fledgling organization was already approached by representatives of the locally based Korean and Bangladeshi leagues that wish to participate with the possible adult division.
Though no dates have been mentioned for the future public informational meetings for NMFA, Coleman said that the information will be announced as soon as it becomes available and that the organizers will remain focused on providing soccer to Saipan.
“We still have a lot of things to do. We have four or five logos to vote on and we have to sign the charter, but I am hopeful that we will have everything ready for registration near the end of August or the beginning of September so that we can get the season underway by mid to late September,” he said.
