The Commonwealth Ports Authority awarded a contract to Maeda Pacific on Monday for a drainage project at the F.C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

At the same time, the CPA board of the directors approved a supplemental budget of $56,455 to cover the shortfall in the project funding.

The general aviation off-site drainage system project was part of an agreement that CPA signed with Continental Micronesia in 1997, when the airline constructed its cargo building at the airport.

The drainage system will prevent rainwater from the commuter terminal from flooding the cargo building area.

According to CPA, the plan has been part of the project listing under the airport division’s capital improvement budget since fiscal year 2001. The budgeted amount was $70,000, of which $6,855 has already been spent on design services and geotesting.

However, the CPA-funded project was delayed for unspecified reasons.

Last month, the ports authority issued a request for proposal for the project. Maeda Pacific submitted the lowest bid, amounting to $119,000. This resulted in a shortfall of $56,455.

The CPA board approved the supplemental budget in a meeting Monday.

CPA said the authority’s in-house engineers would handle the construction management for the project due to funding constraint.
