In order to preserve the quality of images, file formats, and vital records currently under storage, the Marianas Public Lands Authority decided to convert paper, photographic and other physical materials into digital format.

“Additional documents on the selection of materials for digitization and on how to describe and index the materials digitized and on a digital library access mechanism are also being planned,” according to Archiving Division Manager Warren Villagomez.

Among the advantages cited in digital imaging include:

* permitting identical reproduction quality from copy to copy;

* digital images are easily linked to textual descriptions and catalog records;

* these images can be manipulated easily as opposed to photographic means; and

* access is greatly improved via standard Internet technologies and through other similar applications.

For this reason, the MPLA board of directors unanimously voted for the establishment of an Archiving Division that would be tasked with digitizing the agency’s documents, maps, and other office data.
