And then there was one…

There was a reversal of fortune at the Pacific Islands Club on Tuesday night as the previously unbeaten Libweiirs!! were swept by the streaking Air Biscuits and the woeful Yacchatta!! notched its first win against the Small Hustlers in continuation of the 6th Annual Coors Light Four-Person Beach Volleyball League.

The Libweiirs!! loss was perhaps not as shocking as the manner in which they were felled by the Air Biscuits, as one of the true powerhouses of the league were broomed by a team on the rise.

Both teams took to the sand on identical four-game tears, but Dale Roberts and the Biscuits got the upper hand in the first set with an 11-4 win. As with all teams who fall behind in the opener, Libweiirs!! refocused their collective talents for an assault on the Air Biscuits. The Peruvian punisher Mili Saiki was in full force, but Libweiirs!! lost out in the second set, 12-10.

With the best-of-three already in hand, the Air Biscuits continued their push for perfection in the third set, and wafted away with the 11-8 win that improved their record to 5-1. The loss dropped Libweiirs!! to 4-1, but they’ll stay in the running for the pennant if they can knock off the undefeated L.L. Sleese Staks tonight at 5:30pm.

The Staks improved their record to 5-0 on Tuesday night when they gobbled up Ganbarimasho in straight sets, 11-7, 11-6, and 11-1. Laurie Peterka and her band of cagey veterans are making the most of their opportunities this season, and are on target to garner all of the cash and prizes for finishing tops in the regular season.

The same cannot be said for the dedicated bumpers, setters, and spikers of Yacchatta!! who earned their first win of the season in sweeping fashion against the Small Hustlers in the last match of the night. In keeping with the theory of natural progression as it applies to sports, Yacchatta!! improved from last week’s first set win to take their first game.

With injured captain Kimiko Hasegawa cheering from the sidelines, Tyce Mister, Steve Nguyen, Faheem Ebrahim, and Cathy Ton took control of the game early by securing the first set, 11-8. Though not used to having momentum on their side, the fiercesome foursome rode the wave of success to deal the Hustlers an 11-1 defeat. Following a brief celebration, Yacchatta!! substituted one of their stars for one of their scrubs and managed to eke out a 12-10 win to complete the sweep.

With the win, Yacchatta!! improved to 1-4, and they look to advance further in the standings tonight when they face the Smackers at 8:30pm. The Same Smackers team hit the skids against the Beach Side Rockers to fall to 2-3.

Despite jumping out to take the first set, 11-5, the Smackers were unable to deny captain Martin Castro and the Rockers their fourth win of the season. The Lazarus Leaper Jon Cramer was on hand as the Beach Side Rocker rebounded to take the next two sets, 11-4 and 11-7. At 4-2, the Rockers are still well in the hunt for the title, but they need a little help in the form of losses by the L.L. Sleese Staks, Air Biscuits, Libweiirs!!, and Monkeys and Bananas.
