Gov. Juan N. Babauta signed a proclamation yesterday declaring Historic Preservation Week in the CNMI from May 26 to June 2.

“I urge all citizens to recognize this week with contributions to the islands’ understanding of our history and culture,” said Babauta in the proclamation.

This year’s theme is “Restore the CNMI: Preservation begins at Home.”

The event aims to recognize and celebrate the significance of the CNMI’s historic, archaeological, and cultural resources as a source of economic development, education, and identity.

In the proclamation, Babauta cited that the Commonwealth possesses a wealth of historic, archaeological, and cultural resources that document the islands’ long and interesting history.

Historic preservation, he said, is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and for people from all walks of life and all ethnic backgrounds.

Further, he said it is important “to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping preserve the tangible and intangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people.”

Yesterday’s signing ceremony was attended by officials from the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs headed by Secretary Juan L. Babauta and Historic Preservation Office director Epifanio Cabrera.
