Aqua Resort beats Estolas-less Mobil
Aqua Resort Club reaffirmed its mastery over host Mobil Thursday night in the 2005 Mobil Oil Marianas Co-ed Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The defending champions capitalized on the absence of high-scoring guard Andres “Jhun” Estolas and the lack of lady dribblers for Mobil to hack out a 94-83 win in the second game, which was a match-up of last year’s Mobil championship.
Aqua Resort started the game like a house on fire, as Day Ann Deleon and Tony Tonette accounted for all but 12 of the team’s total points in the first quarter, which the hoteliers took 32-20.
Mobil failed to gain any headway in the second quarter even as both teams went five-on-five and Aqua Resort entered halftime with a 50-36 spread.
Aqua Resort’s lead ballooned further with Deleon and Tonette back in the harness in the third.
The team’s new Dynamic Duo combined for 24 points as the hoteliers went ahead by a whopping 24 points, 84-60, going into the fourth and final quarter.
Mobil rallied in the payoff period behind the shooting of Junar Guiab and Edwin Torre. Aqua Resort also helped their comeback hopes by suddenly playing sloppy in the final 10 minutes.
However, it was another case of too little, too late, as Mobil failed to overhaul the lead and Aqua Resort held on to win by 11 points.
Tonette and Deleon each fired 22 points in the win, while center Dalewin Cortez and last year’s MVP Bogs Dayrit chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Errol Peredo and Guiab tried to fill the slack left by Estolas and scored 30 and 23 points in the loss.
Earlier, Dave Sablan went to town with 39 points to lead Commonwealth Ports Authority to a 107-64 win over Commonwealth Utilities Corp. in a showdown of government agencies.
