On the recent economic summit

In the recent economic summit here, a certain Department of Interior official remarked of the loss of American jobs in the U.S. mainland if the U.S. Congress approves certain legislation on raw materials.

What does this DOI official make of Chamorros and Carolinians who would be displaced if the apparel industry permanently deploys elsewhere? Aren’t we part, whole and protected as U.S. citizens by the same Bill of Rights inherent under our U.S. Constitution? This reluctant colonial mentality must cease and desist and for once in its lifetime, DOI must employ the learning curve that we are U.S. citizens too!

I hate to say that the next wave of lasting investments would hail from a now awakened economic giant the People’s Republic of China who’s making an indelible headway by investing in countries like Cambodia and other tiger countries destined to eclipse U.S. investments by the end of this year (Time Magazine’s “Deals and Diplomacy”).

So much for an economic summit where, yes, I heard the same tired old ideas from DOI officials, most of whom aren’t businessmen themselves. They must have seen fit to take on the role of monks explaining to troubled couples how to approach reconciliation. De dios miho! Yeap! Call it wishful regurgitation!

The NMI isn’t absolved from its self-inflicted economic woes and miseries. We have simply failed to proactively provide for ways to protect current investments via reduction of the cost of doing business here. What the local House of Representatives did granting CPA authority to cut taxes is the way to go. Eh, we finally figured out this contraption, right? We should have done this long, long time ago.
