The weekend started early for players in the Saipan Major League who thought their Friday night would be spent playing baseball deep into the evening as the Northern Yankees unleashed a world of hurt to dispatch the Budweiser Kings 20-0 at the Francisco M. Palacios Baseball Field in Oleai.

The hits came early and came often for the pinstripers, as they tallied 17 hits before the umpires invoked the 10-run mercy rule after the boys of Bud bowed out of the seventh without a run.

The Yankees roared out of the gate to set the tone with three runs in the top of the first, and put the game out of reach in the top of the second when they scored eight runs off of five hits to extend their lead to 11-0.

On the other side of the plate, hurlers Chris Camacho and Jonathan Jones combined for a two-hitter, in which they logged only one walk and seven strikeouts. Camacho went the first four innings allowing one hit and the duo’s only walk before Jones took the hill in the bottom of the fifth to finish the contest without allowing run and recording five punch outs.

The Kings may not have adjusted to hitting with the lumber from the old days with the aluminum swat sticks, but Yanks didn’t experience the same difficulty.

The biggest hit of the night was from Yankees third baseman Mel Sakisat who went yard to lead off the top of the seventh inning. Sakisat became only the second player to accomplish the feat in the wooden bat era since Manny Sablan belted a ball over the right field fence in the summer league.

Sakisat finished the night hitting 2-for-4 with a single, a run batted in, and three runs scored, while teammate Clifton Silil went 3-for-5 with three singles, three stolen bases, two runs bated in, and a sacrifice bunt.

The win put the Yankees back into a first place tie with the Ford Rangers at 7-1, while the Kings tumbled to 4-4. The battle of the top squads finally comes to fruition this Saturday, when the Yankees and Rangers meet for the first time at Tan Ko field at 6:30pm.
