EMO monitoring tropical storm
Intermittent showers flooded portions of Saipan yesterday following the formation of a tropical storm south of Guam.
Bad weather also resulted in rough seas. The Emergency Management Office said a small boat capsized beyond the reefline off Saipan, but there was no reported casualty from the incident.
At 7am yesterday, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 40mph. The EMO said the storm tracked west-northwest at 8mph at that time, when its center was about 240 miles south-southeast of Guam and 505 miles east of Yap.
The storm was located about 255 miles south of Guam and 495 miles east of Yap at 1pm, the EMO said. The storm maintained its forward direction but moved slower at 6mph. The EMO said the storm would intensify within 24 hours.
The EMO hoisted no storm watch or warning yesterday afternoon, but said that it would closely monitor weather developments.
EMO public information officer Ben Cepeda said about three to four persons got stranded at sea when their boat capsized off Saipan. But volunteers and boating safety personnel responded to rescue them, Cepeda said.
Boating Safety officer James Omar refused to disclose details about the incident, referring inquiries to Department of Public Safety spokesman Eric David, who could not be reached for interview yesterday.
“We’re going to be experiencing rain through Thursday,” Cepeda said.
