High-tech traffic lights system installed
Emergency vehicles in the CNMI are now capable of controlling traffic signals if the situations warrant it after the Department of Public Works Technical Service Division unveiled the new system during an installation ceremony on one of the island’s main thoroughfares yesterday morning.
TSD director Richard N. Cody said the new system would allow emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks to remotely control signal lights during emergency situations through sensors installed on the poles.
He said drivers of emergency vehicles could, at a certain distance, change a red light into a green light to allow them to reach their destinations faster.
The installation ceremony for the new system was conducted along Route 314 of Chalan Pale Arnold, Lower Base.
DPW Secretary Juan S. Reyes was present during the installation and welcomed guests, visitors, and the media. He said the newly installed traffic system is part of the administration’s effort to provide the public with efficient and safer roads.
Reyes said the new traffic system costs $3.2 million and was funded by a grant from the Federal Highway Administration. The contract to install the new traffic light was awarded to Henry K. Pangelinan and Associates.
Also gracing the installation ceremony were Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego N. Benavente. Other government and private sector officials also attended the event. Rev. Nonoy Ricaido led the invocation, while Cody served as master of ceremonies.
