Estolas still king of Mobil scoring
Guard Andres “Jhun” Estolas successfully defending his scoring title in the 2005 Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Co-ed Invitational Basketball League.
Estolas, who suits up for host Mobil, served as his team’s most lethal scoring weapon and was one big reason why Mobil finished the regular round with an impressive 7-2 win-loss card, with one of the losses suffered while Estolas did not play.
The standout tormented the defenses of all teams en route to averaging a whopping 31.5 points per game after torching the nets for 221 points in seven outings.
With Estolas firing away each time he took the court, Mobil earned another appearance in the league’s playoffs and is scheduled to take on Commonwealth Ports Authority in the semifinals.
Sitting right behind Estolas was fellow scoring machine Dave Sablan, who played a huge role in CPA’s 7-2 finish, courtesy of fearless drives in the lane.
The former San Antonio Sixers forward had many shining moments and closed the regular round with an average of 31 points per game, going off for 248 points in eight bouts.
Forward Errol Peredo, the other half of Mobil’s one-two punch, is third on the list after pumping in 186 points in eight outings for an average of 23.3 points per game, while McDonald’s Michael Achas and Elmer Esdrelon of Dai-Ichi Hotel Saipan Beach rounded up the top five, with Achas bombing away for 204 points for a 22.6 average and Esdrelon working for 152 points for an average of 19 points per game.
CPA’s other lethal scorer also made the list as slotman Jawn Joyner posted the sixth-best average with 17.4 points per game, while Microl-Toyota’s Leo Factor drilled in 156 points for a 17.3 average.
Rounding up the top 10 were Mike Umali and Leo Itaas of Hyatt Regency Saipan and Bogs Dayrit of Aqua Resort Club.
Umali and Itaas posted averages of 17.2 and 16.8 points, while Dayrit led Aqua Resort with 16.1 points per game.
Meanwhile, the semifinals will unfold on Tuesday, June 14, with Estolas and Peredo leading Mobil against Sablan, Joyner, and the rest of the CPA cast at 6pm. Esdrelon and his Dai-Ichi cagers will then suit up against Dayrit and the defending champions beginning at 7pm.
The winners of the two bouts will then battle for all the marbles on June 18 at 4:30pm. The two that lose in the semis will take the court at 3pm in a consolation bout.
