Flyers close out season with a bang
The Master’s Construction Flyers closed out their season on a winning note on Tuesday night as they slapped around the Salty Boys until the umpires invoked the 10-run mercy rule before the start of the seventh inning at Tan Ge field in continuation of the Men’s Island Wide Slow Pitch Softball League.
There was little left to be done following the Flyers’ sixth-inning rampage in which they scored eight runs off of eight hits—including Frank Camacho’s two-run blast in the top of the sixth that gave the Flyers their final tallies of the night.
Overall, the Flyers scored 15 runs off of 18 hits in the abbreviated contest while holding the Salty Boys to five runs off of seven hits. The longball was only used once in the contest, as all but two of the Flyers’ hits were singles.
Camacho’s only hit if the evening was key, but outfielder Joe Lizama went a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of singles, a double, and two runs batted in. Lizama scored twice for the Flyers, as did teammate Roque Camacho, who went 3-for-4 with three singles—including a two-run shot in the sixth that scored Jack Delos Santos and Joe Lizama.
Delos Santos scored twice on the night to raise his season total to 23, but the league leaders were busy earlier in the night.
Verizon 10, Chura 6
Two of the most potent offenses locked horns in the opening match of the night, as Verizon downed the Budweiser Chura 10-6 at the Oleai Sports Complex with consistent hitting and fielding.
Pitcher Tony Camacho allowed just six runs off of nine hits through seven innings of work, but he was busy on the other side of the plate as well. Camacho smacked the only homerun of the game in the top of the first when he took Craig Sanchez’s pitch downtown to give Verizon the 2-0 lead. While he finished 1-for-3 with a pair of ribbies, Camacho upped his league-leading homer total to 18 and kept the lead in plate crossings with 35, and made it home twice to stay within striking distance of leader Mel Sakisat (31) with 27 runs scored.
Sakisat finished the night 2-for-3 for the Chura, and continued his reign atop the league with a .766 batting average by upping his total to 36-for-47.
With a 9-2 lead through five and a half innings, Verizon was in complete control of the game until the Chura rallied in the bottom of the sixth to score four runs off of five hits to keep it close.
Verizon answered back with a run in their next at bat, and silenced Chura to finish the game and Budweiser’s season.
All of the teams will finish their season tonight, as the Saipan Softball Association readies for the playoffs. The Speaker Fitial Survivors, Exclusive, Fadang, and Brotherhood each play tonight, while Verizon and the Salty Boys will see double duty at Tan Ge field in Oleai.
