San Nicolas wins SGA June Ace
Down-the-wire showdowns highlighted the Saipan Golf Association’s June Ace of the Month Tournament at the Lao Lao Bay Golf Resort West Course last June 12, but after all the shots were recorded, Ray San Nicolas beat out 18 other golfers to take home the coveted title.
San Nicolas and Ben Aldan ended their round with identical scores of 72, but it was San Nicolas who was hailed as the victor after winning out on a scorecard tiebreaker.
San Nicolas began his push for the crown by shooting a 41 in the front nine. He continued to show good form and posted a 40 in the back nine for a gross score of nine-over par 81. Equipped with a nine handicap, San Nicolas saw his score drop to 72.
For his part, Aldan began his quest with a 42 on the front nine and followed with a 48 in the back nine to finish at 18-over par 90, but his score sank courtesy of his 18 handicap, resulting in the tie.
Meanwhile, Ed Manibusan and Tony Deleon Guerrero were deadlocked as well in the fight for third place, but just like San Nicolas, Manibusan ended up with the higher finish courtesy of a tiebreaker.
Manibusan was as hot as the torching sun and recorded a 39 in the front nine and 36 in the back nine for a tournament-best gross of three-over par 75. His two handicap lowered his score to 73, identical to that of Deleon Guerrero, who had 15 shots evaporate from his gross score of 88 courtesy of his handicap.
Others who made it to the top 10 with their net scores in parenthesis include Joe Guerrero (74), Joe Sablan (75), Francis Sablan (75), Joe Demapan (75), Ed Sablan (76), and Tony Benavente (77).
Longest drive winners include John Deleon Guerrero on Hole No. 2 and Tony Deleon Guerrero on Hole No. 14, while closest to the pin winners are Francis Sablan on Hole No. 3, John Deleon Guerrero on Hole No. 7, Ed Manibusan on Hole No. 13, and Tony Deleon Guerrero on Hole No. 17.
