Over 60 early risers woke up before the crack of dawn to participate in last Saturday’s walkathon held in the occasion of the 3rd Annual Family Fun Day at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort in Kagman.

The 5-km walk was organized by the Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition and gave walking enthusiasts a first-hand look at the golf resort’s west course, which included a breathtaking panoramic view of LaoLao Bay.

Entire families, young and old donned their sneakers and sweatshirts for the early morning jaunt, which according to LaoLao Bay officials, it plans to make a more regular practice in the future.

“This will not only be a one-time thing. We would surely like to open our facility on a more regular basis for health purposes. It certainly is better than jogging in the middle of traffic. Beach Road is not bad place to jog or walk, but it is better to do this in the middle of nature, surrounded by good views,” said LaoLao Bay president and chief financial officer Hiroyuki Saito.

After the walking activity, most of the participants availed of the free health screening at a tent close to the clubhouse, which was conducted by volunteers from the Department of Public Health and Northern Marianas College.

The health screening included tests for blood pressure and diabetes, which to almost everyone’s surprise was pain free. Pamphlets and literature about lowering blood pressure and preventing diabetes were also available at the tent. A healthy snack of bananas, oranges, and mineral water was also distributed by the Commonwealth Diabetes Coalition after the walk.

Aside from the walk, the 3rd Annual Family Fun Day also featured kite flying, various inflatable rides, a wildlife booth set up by the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, and a water cycle and conservation demonstration organized by the Division of Environmental Quality.

The highlight of the day was the 3rd Annual Family Fun Day Golf Tournament won by Jess Wabol (Championship Flight). Other winners included Jess B. Aldan (A Flight), Yixiao Zhang (B Flight), John B. Matsumoto (C Flight), Edward Manibusan (Senior Flight), Noriko Togawa (Ladies Flight), Charlie Jo (Junior Flight), and Nick Sablan (Peoria Scoring).

Saito and the rest of the staff of LaoLao Bay Golf Resort would like to thank all the participants of the 3rd Annual Family Fun Day and are also looking forward for the event’s fourth annual staging next year.
