Legislature wants new cars, uniforms for DPS
The Legislature is asking the governor to reprogram some $600,000 from the $50 labor fee increase to purchase police uniforms and 24 new patrol cars.
In House Joint Resolution 14-34, the Legislature said that DPS is unable to buy its much-needed police uniforms and vehicles due to a chronic lack of funds.
It described some DPS patrol cars as “beyond a state of repair “ and its staff uniforms as “old and ragged.”
“In order for DPS to continue to meet the daily demands of maintaining law and order, and peace and tranquility in our community, the department needs additional funding,” reads a portion of the resolution, which was introduced by Rep.Clyde Norita.
He said that 24 DPS vehicles are currently out of service “because they are beyond a state of repair.”
He said Saipan DPS needs 20 new patrol cars, while Tinian and Rota would need two patrol cars each.
Norita said the governor can source the money from the $50 labor fee increase that was implemented by the Department of Labor last year.
The resolution was adopted by the House of Representatives on May 24. The Senate adopted it on June 15.
