‘Federal funds needed for Rota, Tinian airport’
The Legislature has adopted a resolution asking the governor to secure federal appropriation or use local funds to install and maintain an instrument landing system for Rota and Tinian.
In House Joint Resolution 14-37, authored by Vice Speaker Timothy P. Villagomez, lawmakers said that visual flight rules are used at the airports in these islands but the installation of a more advanced aircraft landing systems “would be more beneficial to the operation of the said airports and the communities they serve.”
These airports, it said, are “critical to the economic developments of those islands.”
At present, Rota and Tinian international airports do not meet the cost-benefit threshold for installation of an ILS by the Federal Aviation Administration, thus precluding its installation by the FAA, lawmakers said.
Alternative solutions to install an ILS, the resolution said, “lies directly with the U.S. Congress through special appropriation, or the Commonwealth government providing direct funding” for the needed system.
The resolution said the funding should also cover the conduct of repairs and maintenance by the FAA.
