Emergency processing?

Your front page story yesterday morning on the release of 2004 tax rebates quoted Lisa A. Aldan, acting director at the Division of Revenue and Tax, as saying that those wishing to request for expedited processing of their tax refund must show proof of an emergency such as medical or death in the family.

I wonder if Ms. Aldan would consider being able to buy food, pay the CUC surcharge to avoid disconnection, buy cold medicine to fight the cold that is making its rounds on the island, and buy back-to-school things and necessities for the children as possible emergencies qualifying one for a speedy processing or “urgent,” as she was quoted as saying.

If Ms. Aldan thinks that any of the above would constitute an emergency, then I think I have an emergency on my hand. So do countless others on Saipan.
