Borja gets special spending power for 60th WWII events
The Legislature has authorized Tinian Mayor Francisco Borja to disburse more than his usual spending authority for the 60th anniversary commemoration of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.
The Tinian Mayor’s Office’s reprogramming authority is limited to 10 percent of the mayor’s operational funds.
However, in House Joint Resolution 14-40, both houses of the Legislature allowed the Tinian mayor to reprogram funds in his operational accounts in excess of 10 percent cumulative and in total to provide for the 60th commemoration events.
The House of Representatives adopted the resolution on June 29, 2005, with the Senate concurring on Tuesday.
Tinian is historically known as the take off point for Enola Gay and Bock’s Car, which dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9, 1945.
From Aug. 2 to 10, 2005, Tinian will host the commemoration of the event’s 60th anniversary.
The activities include a peace and memorial ceremony commemorating the execution of the atomic missions, oral presentations by the hibakusha or atomic bomb survivors, the Los Alamos National Atomic Museum exhibit, the Tinian Historical Artifact exhibit, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Photo exhibit, the “Witness to the Weapon” video archive recordings of war veterans, various book signings and autograph sessions by veterans and book authors, and reunion of various groups of veteran.
The Tinian local government reportedly needs some $150,000 for the commemoration.
