Due to the relatively low topography the CNMI offers farmers and growers, there has been a limitation in growing lowland coffee but that is about to change.

Northern Marianas College-Cooperative Research Extension and Education Services will be offering a workshop on lowland coffee production next month.

The workshop will be held at the As Terlaje Campus on Aug. 4 to 5 from 9am to 5pm at Room A-9.

CREES agricultural extension agent Ross Manglona said those interested in learning about maximizing the lowlands to grow coffee or robusta more successfully are encouraged to attend.

Manglona said Northern Marianas lowland coffee is making an insurgence in the coffee market. “We would like to take advantage of this and give CNMI farmers an opportunity at venturing into this market.”

Manglona said presenters for the workshop would be fellow agriculture extension agent and farmer Ray MacDuff. He said MacDuff would be discussing the cultivation methods in developing coffee farm in the lowlands.

Department of Lands and Natural Resources nursery manager Beato Calvo will also present during the workshop. He will be discussing the propagation methods of coffee in such a set-up.

Manglona said the college would extend technical assistance to farmers by giving consultation services and advice on pursuing lowland coffee farming.
