200 CNMI teachers to attend NIFDI workshop
Some 200 Public School System teachers will attend the National Institute for Direct Instruction Institute starting Monday next week.
PSS federal programs advisor Tim Thornburgh said NIFDI consultant and project director Linda Frost will be back in the CNMI for a one-week training for the teachers on direct instruction.
He said the training would be from July 25 to 29, 8am to 3pm at the Kagman Elementary School.
Thornburgh said the 200 participants will be teachers from six elementary schools on Saipan and one elementary school each on Rota and Tinian.
He said the institute intends to familiarize the teachers, especially the new ones, with the direct instructional methodology. The institute will also serve as a refresher course for those who have already undergone the training.
The institute will also serve as a special form of assessment for the methodologies being used in direct instructions, said Thornburgh.
Frost, who is from Oregon, conducted a refresher NIFDI course in April.
Frost is dedicated to providing schools with solid training on direct instruction methodology for teachers and teaching aides. She will give an overview of the language program and then discuss how to use data to determine how teachers and students are performing in the program.
She will also discuss building capacities on the island, helping teachers how to do the program correctly. She will also give a refresher on the training the local education system should conduct among teachers with regards to direct instruction.
Direct Instruction, she said earlier, is a model for teaching, emphasizing well-developed and carefully planned lessons designed around small learning increments and clearly defined and prescribed teaching tasks.
