ATOSCOM expands membership roster
The Association of Terminal Operators and Stevedoring Companies or ATOSCOM, one of the oldest non-profit groups to survive the breakup of the Trust Territories, is now the Association of Terminal Operators and Shipping Companies of Micronesia.
At the same time, the organization has voted to expand its membership roster, throwing open its doors to all interested parties in the maritime transportation industry. Originally, the group’s regular membership was only for terminal operators and stevedoring companies.
All these came about during the organization’s 32nd annual meeting that was held last week in the Republic of Palau.
Saipan Stevedore Company was once again selected to be president of the organization for the next year. Kosrae Terminal and Stevedoring Company was selected as Vice President. Waab Transportation Company from Yap and the Port Authority of Guam were chosen as Treasurer and Secretary respectively.
Beginning next month, the organization hopes to begin an area wide training program in Guam. Under the program, participants will travel to Guam and participate in port and vessel planning and operations training.
Matson Navigation, Marianas Steamship Line and the Port Authority of Guam will conduct the training for about one month for each participating member. The program is part of the association’s Alfred Santos Scholarship program, which is named after the late Alfred Santos of Saipan Stevedore, one of ATOSCOM’s founding members.
The organization works to promote efficiency and cooperation in regional shipping and port terminal operations.
