Joe Wabol wins RGA August qualifying tourney
Another Wabol ascended to the top of the leader board in Refaluwasch Golf Association’s August Ace of the Month qualifier held last Saturday, July 25, at the Laolao Bay Golf Resort west course.
Joe Wabol set the score to beat in next month’s Ace tournament when he carded a net score of 71 at the picturesque Kagman golf links.
Wabol shot a gross of 93, but minus his 18 handicap he was able to beat all comers with the sterling net score of one-under. The retired Commonwealth Utilities Corp. employee came away with a 50 in the front and 43 in the back.
Wabol actually was third best for the day, as Jordan Kosam and John Mettao fired net totals of 64 and 67, respectively. However, RGA rules prevent current Ace of the Month winners to take home the monthly plum twice including the qualifier, which gave Wabol the free ride to take the top score in the preliminaries.
For the record, Kosam fired a gross of 87 after the handicap 23 player wound up with a 42 in the front and a 45 in the back. His highlight of the day came when he birdied the 7th hole.
Mettao, for his part, was good for a gross score of 83 after the 16 handicapper swung for a 39 in the front and 45 in the back. He registered a birdie on hole No. 5.
According to RGA president Jess Wabol, the club’s August Ace of the Month would be held in conjunction with the 10th Annual Tournament of Champions set for Aug. 6 and 7 at the LaoLao Bay Golf Resort. Jess Wabol said only the scores on the east course of the links would be counted.
