15 more medals for New Caledonia

KOROR, Palau—The swimmers from the NMI had another great day in the pool, but controlling much of the action was New Caledonia, whose swimmers earned all but one of the 15 medals bagged by the country Thursday night to pad their medal lead in the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games.

New Caledonia continued to showcase its dominance, taking gold in all eight events, earning at least two medals in each of the other individual competitions. The team took gold in the men’s 400m Freestyle Relay and the women’s 400m Medley Relay.

Meanwhile, the Nauru continued its golden streak, grabbing another three gold medals to improve to a total of 18 gold for second place in the medal standings, while Fiji passed Papua New Guinea for the third spot, doubling their gold medal count by adding eight more courtesy of another solid night on the track. Fiji now sits with 16 gold, 14 silver, and seven bronze for a total of 37 medals.

PNG dropped to fourth place, but still added a gold, two silver, and two bronze to their tally, giving them a total of 26 medals. The delegation sports 12 gold, eight silver, and six bronze.

Making the biggest jump was Samoa, which moved from 10th in the standings to fifth after taking home nine medals, all being gold, Thursday night. In addition to the one gold and four silver earned earlier in the Games, the host of the 2007 South Pacific Games have a total of 14 medals.

Federated States of Micronesia (four gold and one silver), Palau (four gold and four bronze), and Tonga (three gold, one silver, and three bronze) did not medal, but still remained in the top 10.

Guam burst ahead of CNMI after taking a gold, two silver, and three bronze, while the NMI rests in 10th place with a gold, 13 silver, and five bronze for a total of 19 medals, all coming courtesy of the swimmers.

Cook Islands increased its total to eight medals, Solomon Islands remained with six, Wallis & Futuna with three, Vanuatu with two, Niue with three, Tuvalu with two, and Norfolk Island with one.
