Powerhouse New Caledonia is stealing the show in the 2005 Palau South Pacific Mini Games, and as of press time, had already collected a whopping 48 gold medals.

The French colony is as impressive as anyone could ever dream of, also racking up 25 silver and 19 bronze after one week of competition for a grand total of 92 medals.

Several days still remain before the 2005 Mini Games says goodbye, however, with its big lead in the medal tally, New Caledonia seems like a sure lock to end the Games with the most medals.

Far back and working on holding a firm grip on second place is Fiji, which now has hauled in 20 gold, moving ahead of Nauru, which still has 18 gold medals. Fiji, which dominated several athletics events as well as outrigger canoe, also has 19 silver and 14 bronze for a total of 53 medals, also second most in the Games.

Papua New Guinea also found success on the track and ended the first week of competition with 16 gold, nine silver, and seven bronze medals for a total of 32, while Samoa’s 11 gold and six silver puts them next in line with 17 medals.

Cook Islands jumped up a notch as of yesterday with four gold, nine silver, and six bronze, while Palau—four gold, one silver, and six bronze—follows.

Tonga, Federated States of Micronesia, and the Northern Marianas cap the top 10. Tonga has grabbed four gold, a silver, and three bronze; FSM four gold, one silver, and a bronze; and the NMI has two gold, 17 silver, and eight bronze for a total of 27, 26 of which was earned by the delegation’s swimmers. The other medal, a bronze, was won by table tennis, who co-shared the medal with Fiji.
