DEQ and CRM graduate summer interns
The Division of Environmental Quality and Coastal Resources Management ended the nine-week 2005 Coral Reef Initiative Summer Internship Program yesterday.
Seven interns graduated this year and were presented the work they have accomplished this summer in their respective project assignments.
James Arriola, Carlo Calibo, Roxanna Arriola and Janice Anne Castro worked at the CRM office at Permit, Enforcement, and Outreach and Education divisions, respectively. Sherriann Songsong, Francisco Villagomez and Lorraine Catienza worked with the Biosearch, Biology, and Non-Point Source Pollution departments.
The seven interns each received certificates of completion awarded to them by DEQ director John Castro and CRM director Jack Salas. Officers and other employees of DEQ and CRM attended the presentation yesterday held at the DEQ conference room. Parents and friends of the interns also attended the event.
Summer program coordinator Qamar Schuyler said the goal of the internship program was to provide postsecondary student with hands-on experience working in at least two of the natural resources agencies. The program, she said, is open yearly to high school graduates and college students.
Songsong, 18, said she has learned a lot in the summer internship program. She said it was her first time to work with the agencies that she has gained more knowledge now in the conservation and protection of the environment.
Catienza, another first-time intern, said the summer program was a lot of fun for her. She said she was able to extend assistance during the recently concluded EcoArts Festival held last week at the American Memorial Park. She said she met a lot of fun and exciting people during the course of her work.
